America has been the chief financial supporter of Israel since 1948. But today, many Americans and leaders across the globe argue that businesses and governments should punish, boycott, and sanction Israel. There have been attempts to thwart trade deals, undermine Israel’s security interests, and harm Israeli people and enterprises in recent years. The United Nations has been hostile to Israel. Europe and Israel ignited protests after then-President Trump supported moving our embassy to Jerusalem, and the horrific October 7th attack by Hamas.
Showing support for Israel is not the popular choice
Many argue that Israel is a belligerent and should be sanctioned rather than supported. As an American, I note that my country has given more than 100 billion dollars in various forms of aid to Israel in the last 40 years. A few applaud, but a growing number are aghast. Many are shouting, “Enough is enough,” alleging that Israel oppresses Palestinians and is guilty of crimes against humanity.
Most Arab nations do not recognize Israel’s right to exist. Several nations call for the destruction of Israel in their Constitutions. The United Nations has been hostile to Israel as well—refusing to recognize Israel’s right to parts of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount and officially reprimanding Israel more times in the last 40 years than it has all other nations combined. Few countries stand with Israel. Should America? Should Christians?
The compelling argument for supporting Israel
When considering if it is proper to support Israel, the most important consideration is: What does the Bible say? It is important to remember that supporting Israel is a faith issue. Every believer from every nation should stand with Israel. The following Scriptures note why:
- God will bless those who bless Israel (Genesis 12:3). “And I will bless them that bless thee and curse him that curseth thee; and in thee shall all nations of the earth be blessed.”
- Those who move against Israel will suffer harm (Zechariah 12:2-3). “I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling…I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves.”
- God will prosper those who support Israel (Psalm 122:6). “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, they shall prosper that love thee.”
- God has a special love and compassion for Israel (Hosea 11:8-9). “How can I give you up, how can I hand you over, Israel? All my compassion is aroused…For I am God…”
- The Lord will rescue Israel from enemies who believe themselves stronger (Jeremiah 31:10- 11). “He…will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’ For the LORD will ransom and redeem them from the hand of those stronger than they.”
The adage is true, “The friend of Israel is the friend of God.”
The political climate in the last days will become increasingly turbulent. In the name of tolerance, Christian views will become marginalized. There will be penalties for those who are bold in their faith. What should the believer do? The call is not to fear, but to have faith. True peace comes when one accepts Jesus into their heart as Lord and Savior and puts their faith in Him.
From that decision flows forgiveness, joy, hope, and the promise of eternity in heaven. Bible prophecy reveals how God will move in the last days. Though we may not understand every aspect of His plan, we can be confident that God is good and has a plan for Israel and His people.
